We have finished one of the fastest rounds of trapping yet. Things are starting to really slow down. Cool nights and cloudy days do not warm water make. Yet we must not lose hope in these cold days, for we shall prevail!

Yesterday, all of the traps(turtle-less for the 3rd consecutive day) were removed from the first and second ponds, ending round two. A couple of the traps were set a little strangely…but the ones that were set correctly didn’t catch anything either. We are now finished unless we start a bait preference study or a slower [...]

I finished getting all the soil samples from the second wetland this afternoon! What I started working on this summer is almost done. Now we will continue testing the pH for all the samples in the lab.

The flowers are still being pressed and plans for identifying them are in the works. I may have to go collect some more and press those. The wetland is a little more moist after the last few days’ rain. Research with the wetland is going good.

We did some more gram staining today on the three samples we thought might be potential coliforms. We found two different bacteria on the sample 5 plate, both of which turned out to be gram negative rods. The other two samples (3 and 8) also turned out to be gram negative, which means we have [...]

On September 24th we found 3 trees with a Myotis colony. We were only able to see them in 2 of the trees. Later that night I went with John to film the emerging of the bats. We decided to film tree 23 which happened to be the tree we could only hear the colony in. [...]

We are almost done with soil sampling in the second wetland. I have a few more plots to pull, and I am going to try to do those tomorrow. Then, we will finish the pH tests.
September 26, 2007 – 9:10 am
This past monday 2 members of our research team went out tree checking. They discovered a couple colonies of southern myotis. So Kyle and myself went back to the site to video the bats emerging from the tree. The whole process took about two hours with about 30 minutes of video. It wasn’t a large colony, but [...]

So, this week we are trapping the 1st and 2nd ponds at the same time. Today the traps were set, but I wasn’t there, so I don’t know how that went. We may do a bait study. But whether or not we do that, I’m looking forward to analyzing some of the growth data.

We have been searching for different cameras for our gecko experiment. We have narrowed it down to two different cameras. We needed the night shot feature to observe different behaviors at night with the geckos. There is a difference between cameras with night shot and night view. Sony seems to be our best choice. Most cameras [...]
