Wetland Flowers

Research with the wetland flowers continues to go well.  We dug most of the pokeweed out of wetland one, and the flowers that were collected have been identified.  Soon, we will spray to clear out some of the unwanted or harmful plants.  All is well that ends well.

Comparison of Bacteria Between Two Ponds

Today we inspected the growth on our plates from our final water sample.  There did not appear to be as much growth as last week’s sample.  The strep plates did not have any growth them, as usual.  We counted to plates, but we unable to streak today because we are out of agar plates.  We [...]

Too much water to work

The research area in which the roost trees are found are located in a swamp. The swamp has been dry most of the summer due to the lack of rain. Over about a 4-5 day period we got somewhere around 6-7 inches of rain. When my partner and I went out on thursday, the area [...]

Stuck in the mud

Last monday I recieved a call from one of my team members who needed some help getting his truck out of the mud. Since I am the team leader I felt it was my duty to help however I could. So I called up Mr. Carver and we loaded up and went out to the [...]

Comparison of Bacteria Between Two Ponds

Today we began our last round of sampling.  There appeared to be more deposits in the water this week, which is probably because of the rain we had last week.  Tomorrow we are going to see what kind of growth we have and try to separate the bacteria.  Next week we will do our final [...]

Bat Research 10/29/07

We went to the site today. We found that although it had dried up some it was still to wet to go out there, so we came back.

The Life and Times of a Batsearcher: 10/22/07

What a great day! Last week, I had an interview, so I had to miss research. However, today definitely made up for it. Bethany and I went out at about 3:00PM. It had been raining all day, but thankfully had stopped when we got into the forest. I parked about the middle of the road [...]

The Life and Times of a Batsearcher: 10/8/07

Bow season started recently, so we have these really cool orange vests to wear while we’re out now. I don’t know how well the hunters are doing this year, though, because there are still a lot of deer at our research site. Other than that, research continues to go well. Kyle and I are much [...]

The Life and Times of a Batsearcher: Mid-Term Evaluation

So, I’ve learned a few things from my experiences so far. First of all, compasses are extremely useful. It’s very easy to lose direction in the woods, so I don’t know what I would do without this trusty pal. Secondly, bats don’t typically fly at you unless you leave the light in their eyes for [...]

The Life and Times of a Batsearcher: 9/24/07

I’ve discovered that I could live in Tree 45. There are two trees that we check in which it is necessary to climb into to see the bats. Tree 45 is by far my favorite of them. It’s the only cypress tree on the route, and there are never mosquitos in it. The entrance is [...]
